Doing a business in Kenya should not be hard. There are many young people who have the ideas, the will power and even some capital to get going but they do not know where to start. In this post, I will simplify the documents you need to start a business in Kenya.

1.KRA pin

A KRA pin is a document needed by the government of Kenya. It shows that one is a registered tax payer. The 2015, Tax Procedures Act has mandated every citizen to acquire a KRA pin. This pin is also needed to open a bank account.

2. Business Permit

A business permit is a license needed to operate business in Kenya. It is a consolidation of the following: health certificate, city council business permit, clearing and forwarding permit, fire, and trading license.

3. Business Name Registration Certificate

It is important that you choose a unique business name that has not yet been selected by any other company. Countrywide, the government service centers ( Huduma) enables one to register their name. In Nairobi, this can be done at the Nairobi City Council.

4. Food and Health Certificate

This is a certificate needed in the food and beverages sector.

(In the next post, I will write about how to acquire these documents. Note that the above list is not exclusive. In Kenya new regulations come up and some businesses like transportation may require license from Kenya Film and Classification and the Music Copyright Society to operate)
